Archibald (Andrew) Wilson was born 30 NOV 1794 in Irvine, Ayr, Scotland (LDS has an Archie at Dundonald 1796 - relative ?). He died 11 FEB 1863 in Kirkgate, Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was the son of Joseph Wilson (1769-?) and Marion Murray (1768-?). His siblings were Mary Wilson (1800-?), Jane Wilson (1793-?), Frances Wilson (1796-?), James Wilson (1798-?), Alexander Wilson (1804-?), Joseph Wilson (1802-?), John Wilson (1789-?).
Archibald (Andrew) Wilson's wife was Margaret Simpson (1793-?). They were married INT 10 FEB 1822 (LDS=1822!) in Irvine, Ayr, Scotland. They had six known children named James Wilson (1821-?), Joseph Wilson (1823-?), Janet Wilson (1826-?), Archibald Wilson (1828-?), Mary Wilson (1835-?), and Marion Wilson (1831-?).
Puzzle - The first two children of this family have the father recorded as Andrew. The later children show the father recorded as Archibald. All children were brought up as children of Archibald. They were not married at the time of James's birth, but were married before Joseph's birth (!). James's birth record is added to the local register some time afterwards in a different hand to the regular registrar of the time, while Joseph's shows father as Andrew, despite Archibald and Margaret being married by this time. Mystery. Was Archibald named Archibald Andrew ? Or was the registrar mistaken ? Registrars in those times often spelled as they chose, and used given names as they saw fit. Anyone know the answer to the riddle ?
