James Tosh was born in susp. Port Glasgow - twin of Robert Tosh. He was the son of Wallace Tosh (1878-?) and Jane Stewart McLachlan (1878-?). His siblings were Sarah Galbraith Tosh (1900-?), Wallace Tosh, Robert Tosh.
